Machismo And Hispanic Culture - 794 Words

America used to have the same gender roles as Hispanic culture but now it’s been fading away quickly and are getting close to gender equality while Hispanic culture are still behind compared to other developing countries culture. In Hispanic culture there are two types of roles, Machismo which applied to the male and Marianismo to the female. Machismo is associated with dominant and Marianismo is associated with dependent and submissive. To understand the word Machismo, one must understand that in Mexico, being born a male is of high prestige and valued more than if one was born female. These two examples of men’s views about women are not shared by them only, but shared by many Mexican males. Literature review Defining work nature Work nature can be defined as a process through which people work on a particular given task. The contemporary workplace does not see only those who work as a full timer with a particular company. Part timers work for fewer hours and they also get less payment than the full timers. The wisdom of selecting the jobs of their choice has facilitated the resource of enjoyment for them as well. They do according to their needs (Brinkley 2016). However, the biggest problem for such nature of work is the consistency to work on a regular basis. In such kind of work nature, professionals feel themselves as independent. This is probably one reason that prevents them from being consistent with their works. They do not feel pressure of working as per the needs of the organisations. On contrary to this, employees working either as a part timer or as full timer in such organisation are bound to work in fixed schedules. Moreover, they are in regular surveillance of their supervisors. They are bound to work according to the instructions of the management. On the other hand, freelancers do not have any supervision on them. They do not have any fixed working schedules as well. Such freedom hampers their determ ination. They can work equally well to those working in the organisation; however, they are found less committed with the timings and the consistency. Nevertheless, this is not a very healthy sign for a long sustained work as a freelancer (Kalleberg and Dunn 2016). Sustainability Sustainability has become one of the most talked topics across the globe. This has not only influenced the labours but it has also influenced the different small and multinational organisations. Organisations have their own issue for which they are struggling to attain the sustainability. However, on the other hand, labours have different set of challenges ahead of them, which has challenged their sustenance with the current job. Those who work as a full timer in organisations have to face several such organisational rules and policies, which are not according to their thought process. In such circumstances, people with solid determination continue with the job. However, those who do not have any strong determination tend to struggle with their job. They look for their kind of jobs, which means they are not settled with the existing jobs. In this regards, Millennial can be viewed as such labours who are in a continuing search of a job of their kind (Winnard et al. 2014). Freelancers on the other hand have also challenges ahead of them to attain sustainability with their kind of work. They are very selective as they choose task according to their desire and needs. The selectiveness in them compels them for being off the track for a notable time span. They lacks in consistency, which is problematic in the way of sustainability (Kotrba et al. 2012). Another identified issue with such nature of work is the quality of work, which can be on a lower side than the work quality at the organisational level. This can be because of various reasons such as lack of concentration while doing the task. This can also be because no one had supervised the work (Shields et al. 2015). Additionally, teamwork is also missing in such working environment, which is very necessary for knowledge sharing. Nevertheless, supervision and knowledge sharing are two very important factors that produce a significant supportive hand to a particular task. Lack of supportive environment a nd a lack of consistency in freelancers are two most potential challenges for sustainability (Gallie et al. 2012). Strengths of gig-economy Gig-economy provides solution to work pressure, which is strongly absent in the traditional work nature. It offers the selection of task, which is hardly the case with the traditional work nature. It offers an independent working environment where employees would have no supervision at all. It is highly flexible where freelancers can work according to their availability. They can also avail leaves when it is required. Interestingly, this would not require any application sending to the companys HRM. It is providing solution to the highly incrementing demands for freelancers in nowadays (Mulcahy 2016). Weaknesses of gig-economy It discourages a consistent work, which can be threatening for sustenance. Freelancers are not treated as an integral part of organisation although they are doing the same task as done by those in the organisation. They are being paid but are not given an equal importance. Freelancing jobs lack consistency, which is less certain with traditional form of jobs. It indeed provides a good platform to earn; however, it is difficult to perform consistently well in such working platform (Burtch, Carnahan and Greenwood 2016). Affect on the lives of workers The contemporary nature of work has affected a significant population with its sheer effect. The gig-working style has influenced the workers in numerous ways. They have now attained flexible job timings, which is rarest possible with the traditional job style. Flexibility has grown on popularity in the contemporary world. Employees now have high passion for flexible shift timings, which could provide them work life balance. Very few companies in this regard have so far shown some resilience. IBM is one of those companies, which offers work life balance to its employees. However, very few companies have shown resilience in that regard. Options are ample to gig-workers. There are very less barrier to entry. On the other hand, it offers numerous opportunities to the freelancers. They now have unlimited options of jobs, which they can hire by inhibiting different job related skills. This has become possible because such jobs do not require any interview given to the interviewee. It just requires the possession of different skills and delivering the possessed skills at the right spot. Safety is another important asset, which the gig-workplace provides to its gig-workers. Gig-workers can now sit and relax safely at their home and deliver the required task using the dedicated apps. They are not required to go to the office and do extensive physical works (Donovan, Bradley and Shimabukuru 2016). The gig-economy has posed ample of challenges to the gig-workers as well. Inconsistent income is one of the commonest challenges that they have in the gig-economy. Low barriers to entry are one of the potential factors behind the fact. People can anytime enter to the network and replace the existing worker. This can happen because a low rated freelancer might not get consistent projects to his or her credit. Some other might get the opportunity. Competition is very high in gig-economy, which has made things challenging for the workers. To sustain the flow of projects, they need to be highly efficient with the projects. They are required to deliver the projects with utmost quality. Threat of not getting ample projects might hinder gig-workers from a consistent earning. Job security is less in gig-economy although ample of projects is there on the various freelancing sites. Once a gig-worker looses a contract, this would be difficult for him or her to get another better option in quick time. It offers solutions in two forms such as OnTalk and OnTalk Vault. It covers solutions such as securing the real time list of contacts, voice calls, SMS, instant messaging, media files etc. Eight random employees had been selected from the company for the scheduled interview. Each of the respondents has more or less similar thoughts regarding the gig-workplace. They replied according to their knowledge; however, their answers are very much in line with the literature review. Three respondents have supported the gig-workplace; however, they have also highlighted that inconsistent income is a threat in such working culture. Two other respondents have said that job security is less there in the gig-economy. However, they have also not denied the importance of gig-workplace. Job security was perhaps the one factor that has discouraged them from participating in the gig-economy. Rest three respondents have said that gig-economy is a good resource to flexible work, which is rarely available with the traditional format of working. However, they are also frightened of inconsistent income and job security. Findings Eight respondents were chosen on a random basis from TreeBox Solutions Company in Singapore. All the respondents came with little or more different responses; however, on a whole, they all supported the gig-economy. On the other hand, they have also shown concerns for the negatives, which are accustomed with the gig-workplace (Pinsof 2015). Interview has helped the learner to reach to a conclusion on the chosen subject topic. All the responses were in the line of the elements that were covered in the literature review section. It was found that gig-economy is the demand of Millennial, which supplies them ample of opportunities that they need. The flexibility in the gig-working nature has been found as the one point that is more fascinating to the respondents. This is something, which has missed in big time in the traditional working format. Flexibility is the rarest thing, which is seldom to the traditional workplace. Millennial in particular has high passion for work life balance. T hey have many other things, which are important to them. Millennial have their tendency to search for better option until a certain time span, which is why freelancing jobs appear fascinating to them (De Stefano 2015). The freedom to work on their own is another point, which the respondents had supported during the interview. This is hardly possible with the traditional work place. In the traditional organisations, employees are needed to perform the task according to the instructions from the supervisors. In other words, they are needed to work under strict surveillance of management. On contrary to this, gig-workers have independent life where they can make decisions of their own. In such workplace, they supervise their works (Chen and Sheldon 2016). Varied range of options was found as another reason, which excites their feelings for the gig-economy. In traditional organisations, it is indeed difficult to shuffle between different kinds of skills. It usually involves a thorough p rocess before it happens. On contrary to this, gig-workers have varied range of jobs available to them where they can easily shuffle with different jobs by inhibiting a different set of skills. They rather just require possessing and learning different skills, which would provide them earning varied ways of earning (Dokko, Mumford and Schanzenbach 2015). Despite the benefits that the gig-economy provides to the Millennial, it also has some disadvantages that frighten the Millennial. All the respondents have supported that inconsistent earning is a big threat to the gig-workers (Rogers 2016). They have believed that low barrier to entry is the cause behind a higher risk of losing the project (Sundararajan 2016). This is accustomed with less sustenance of jobs. Bad ratings for a freelancer can keep him or her away from projects. This is also threatening because clients prefer quality works, which is less possible in gig-economy. It means that sustainability is at stake in gig-economy (Zysman et al. 2014). Inconsistent working is another threat that according to all the respondents are problems with the gig-workplace. It is very difficult for freelancer to be consistent with their jobs. They gets habituated with such stuff and find this difficult to be consistent with their job. Gaps are highly evident, which rarely happens as long as e mployees stay in organisations (Nevin 2017). Conclusion Gig-economy is a highly incremented option for the Millennial, which has attracted many Millennial towards the concept. It has brought rapid changes in the working style. Now organisations do not only depend on traditional workplace. They instead have some other options as well such as part time workers and freelancers. Freelancers in particular have opened up ample of options to the employers. They can now get their job done from external resources as well. However, quality of works might hamper, as they are not recognised faces who work as a freelancer for organisations. The interview conducted with randomly selected eight respondents of TreeBox Solutions Company in Singapore has helped to conclude the research report. The results were in the line of literature review as it supplied the same information. Different respondents differed in their responses to each other slightly. However, they more or less supplied the same set of information, which also helped the learner to conclude the report. Gig-economy is a good option for the Millennial provided they are consistent with their jobs and provide quality to their works. Inconsistent work performance is a threat to consistent earning. On contrary to this, inconsistent performance in traditional workplace does not hamper the earning to that extent. This is because employees in such workplace intentionally or unintentionally perform their duty. On contrary to this, it is never possible with the gig-workplace. The Natural Cafà © is a fantastic restaurant to go to for a healthy, reasonably priced meal, but lacks in traditional restaurant customer service. The Natural Cafà © is a small chain of restaurants based throughout Ventura County that serves health hearty meals with organic ingredients. It is open every day for lunch and dinner and they have pick up and to-go orders as well. The restaurant is very earth friendly and recycles all of their glass, cans, and paper. As you walk in the door of the restaurant they have really set the tone for a serene and calm setting. There are very high ceilings and splashes of earth tone colors, like green and deep yellows and oranges and brown, cover the walls. There are plenty of spacious dining tables to choose from once you order. The booths are wooden and not too comfortable to sit in but it gives to that nature feel in the dining area. Like most cafà ©s there is seating outside as well. The outside seating area has patio heaters with tables and chairs with padding. For the vegetarian or vegan, they have a variety of different veggie options and for the meat lovers they offer entrees from a great chicken enchilada to an even better turkey burger. They also offer natural sodas, made-to order fresh fruit and vegetable smoothies, and also beer and wine. Everything is prepared fresh daily. When you pay to eat at a restaurant, you should be waited on from the time you step foot in the door. There should be a hostess there to greet the customer, show them to their table and handed a menu. At The Natural Cafà ©, you are in charge of seating yourself after ordering your meal at the counter. That can be good for the customer that likes the freedom to sit where they please. There is no one waiting at the door to greet you; instead, you will be greeted by an employee standing in the opposite direction behind a cash register that will let you know where you can grab a menu and when you are ready, she will take your order at the counter. This is informal for the customer that would like to relax and take their time to sit down and think about what sounds good on the menu without being rushed. The menus are usually hanging in a slot on the right side just before you walk down toward the cashier. The cashier is very friendly and if you have questions about something on the menu the employee is more than happy to answer it. They are very aware of what ingredients are used and how it tastes. After giving your order at the counter, you’re given a number to be set at your table. This is so that the person bringing out your food will know what order is yours. To some people, that could be impersonal and considered rude to the paying customer. Also, if there were a waiter that took the order at the table the waiter sat them at, the food would come out faster and hotter because that waiter would know whose table to bring it to and not have to look all over the restaurant for your number on the table. The food should look appetizing and taste delicious. Not everyone wants to eat healthier unless it looks and tastes tempting. The Natural Cafà © does a great job at making their entrees look presentable and the smell of the juicy Gobbler Burger-which is a popular item on the menu- lets you know it’s going to taste amazing. Looks and Love Before I left home for college, my group of friends and I sat down for one last serious heart-to-heart. Sometime during our conversation, the question of college choice arose. Emotions escalated as we realized how far apart we would be in a short time. "Why did you choose to go to MIT?" they asked, "Why couldn't you just stay home at a state university?" Wanting to lighten the mood, I replied, laughing, "That's an easy one...the guys, of course!" And after the initial uproar of laughter died down and the comments about geeks and scrawny computer nerds subsided, I said, "I'm serious." I was. Where else would I find an intelligent and genuine guy who would be mature enough for me? When I arrived in Massachusetts and classes finally started, so did my "man mission." Most of the men I met blew the boys back home out of the water, and one lucky day, I peered past my twirling pink pen and found Him. The more I learned about Him, the more enamored I became. Yet I, a usually outgoing and assertive young woman, felt uncomfortable approaching this wonderful person in that more-than-a-friend kind of way. The worst part about the situation was that I knew exactly where my uneasiness was coming from. Unlike the guys at home, where seventy percent of the young male population had black hair and dark brown eyes, this guy was blonde and fair-skinned, a stark contrast not only to the male population back home, but to me. I am not a racist person, but the petty idea that this guy did not share like features with me, hindered me from appreciating what we did share and made me more aware of the differences between us. So where then, did this silly idea of single race relationships come from? Why did He an... ...zines remind me that this relationship would not be the most socially accepted or ordinary thing to do. But it is ordinary. I know I've fallen for this guy because of his humor and quirkiness, his intelligence, his kindness, and his character, things that I should be looking for. So now, I sit here in my baggy calf-length skater shorts and bright orange hooded sweatshirt and stare across the seats, focusing on his neatly ironed khakis and dark blue dress shirt, and think that our hypothetical relationship would die quickly. I'm still that closed-lipped girl from the beginning of the story when it comes to my feelings because I don't want to be rejected, and for some reason I feel like we might not be right for each other, even though I know we are. And it depresses me that somehow, our ad-driven society is probably convincing him of that same exact thing.

The Book: Boofheads

Essay on Boofheads by Mo Johnson. The book Boofheads is a story based on prejudice. Prejudice is here in every day society. This book was written by Mo Johnson for teenagers that have the same problem. The problem is sexism. The prejudice in the book is sexism and how it can affect people in such ways that they have to give up one of the most important things in life. With the three seventeen year old boys Ed, Steve and Tom sexism is a big problem. In the book Boofheads by Mo Johnson sexism is a problem between young boys and girls. The ‘girl’ saying about girls being smart and boys being dumb. This was a clear demonstration of prejudice in Boofheads. In chapter three the three best-friends Ed, Steve and Tom were all in English class. Their teacher had asked Tom a question about the book ‘Pride and Prejudice’ which the class had been given to read for homework. One of the girls in the class named Amy Jones had spoke up before Tom could start to answer his question. Amy then answered the question correctly and turned to Tom and Steven to comment on how ‘dumb’ they were. Her arguments aim was to prove that girls were clearly smarter than boys and that they were not able to produce a â€Å"single word of half decent English,† Amy had commented. This example explains why this passage from the book has the prejudice of sexism. Boofheads by Mo Johnson has a main story line on three teenage boys pretending to be a 36 year old lady in order to have a column in a teenage girl’s magazine. The three boys Ed, Steve and Tom have had the opportunity to prove themselves right to all the sexist girls in their school. They are going to become a fake lady so that they can answer teenage girls’ problems in Tom’s mother’s magazine. Each month they get an email from Toms mum with problems from girls around the state. They come up with solutions to the problem and send an email back to Toms mum with the answers. They only do this to prove that boys can produce a ‘single word of half decent English’. The girls in the boys’ school are adamant that the boys are dumb and these three boys want to prove that they are not. In Boofheads the seventeen year old boy named Tom has a mother that is a fussy magazine editor. One of the best in the country. She has a messy office and never relies on Tom’s advice. Tom is always giving his mother advice on the look of the magazine, contrasting colours and some fashion ideas. He is usually right as his mother gets the same criticism from her boss. She never even realises that Tom gave the same advice to her rior to her changes. She does not believe that a male has any brain for a magazine and they need to stick to the things that men are supposed to do. Tom could be right on the spelling of a word and she would still not believe him. This shows that women of an older age are still sexist to males when it comes to how smart they really are. In conclusion the book Boofheads by Mo Johnson was a book about sexism. It was mainly based on sexism on males by females. This is why Boofheads is a book about prejudice.

Then I will execute dd command by typing dd if=/dev/hda6 of=/mnt/usbdrive/murder. img bs=4096This tells Linux to make a bit stream copy from the input â€Å"file† (â€Å"if†) /dev/hda6 (which is the E partition of the hard drive), to the output â€Å"file† (â€Å"of†) /mnt/usbdrive/murder. img (which is a file called murder. img on the usb drive disk). Since most Ruby scripts wont have graphical user interfaces, youll be running them from the command line. Thus, youll need to know, at the very least, how to navigate the directory structure and how to use pipe characters (such as |,   and ) to redirect input and output. The commands in this tutorial are the same on Windows, Linux, and OS X. To start a command prompt on Windows, go to Start - Run. In the dialog that appears, enter cmd into the input box and press OK.To start a command prompt on Ubuntu Linux, go to Applications - Accessories - Terminal.To start a command prompt on OS X, go to Applications - Utilities - Terminal. C:\rubycd \scripts Running Ruby Scripts Now that you know how to navigate to your Ruby scripts (or your rb files), its time to run them. Open your text editor and save the following program as  test.rb. #!/usr/bin/env ruby    print What is your name? name gets.chomp puts Hello #{name}! Open a command line window and navigate to your Ruby scripts directory using the  cd  command. Once there, you can list files, using the  dir  command on Windows or the  ls  command on Linux or OS X. Your Ruby files will all have the .rb file extension. To run the test.rb Ruby script, run the command  ruby test.rb. The script should ask you for your name and greet you. Alternatively, you can configure your script to run without using the Ruby command. On Windows, the  one-click installer  already set up a file association with the .rb file extension. Simply running the command  test.rb  will run the script. In Linux and OS X, for scripts to run automatically, two things must be in place: a shebang line and the file being marked as executable. The shebang line is already done for you; its the first line in the script starting with  #!. This tells the shell what type of file this is. In this case, its a Ruby file to be executed with the Ruby interpreter. To mark the file as executable, run the command  chmod x test.rb. This will set a file permission bit indicating that the file is a program and that it can be run. Now, to run the program, simply enter the command  ./test.rb. Whether you invoke the Ruby interpreter manually with the Ruby command or run the Ruby script directly is up to you. Functionally, they are the same thing. Use whichever method you feel most comfortable with. Using Pipe Characters Using the pipe characters is an important skill to master, as these characters will alter the input or output of a Ruby script. In this example, the  Ã‚  character is used to redirect the output of test.rb to  a text file  called test.txt instead of printing to the screen. If you open new test.txt file after you run the script, youll see the output of the test.rb Ruby script. Knowing how to save output to a .txt file can be very useful. It allows you to save program output for careful examination or to be used as input to another script at a later time. C:\scriptsruby example.rb test.txt Similarly, by using the  Ã‚  character instead of the  Ã‚  character you can redirect any input a Ruby script may read from the keyboard to read from a .txt file. Its helpful to think of these two characters as funnels; youre funneling output to files and input from files. C:\scriptsruby example.rb Then theres the pipe character,  |. This character will funnel the output from one script to the input of another script. Its the equivalent of funneling the output of a script to a file, then funneling the input of a second script from that file. It just shortens the process. The  |  character is useful in creating filter type programs, where one script generates unformatted output and another script formats the output to the desired format. Then the second script could be changed or replaced entirely without having to modify the first script at all. C:\scriptsruby example1.rb | ruby example2.rb The Interactive Ruby Prompt One of the great things about Ruby is that its test-driven. The interactive Ruby prompt provides an interface to the Ruby language for instant experimentation. This comes in handy while learning Ruby and experimenting with things like regular expressions. Ruby statements can be run and the output and return values can be examined immediately. If you make a mistake, you can go back and edit your previous Ruby statements to correct those mistakes. To start the IRB prompt, open your command-line and run the  irb  command. Youll be presented with the following prompt: irb(main):001:0 Type the  hello world  statement weve been using into the prompt and hit Enter. Youll see any output the statement generated as well as the return value of the statement before being returned to the prompt. In this case, the statement output Hello world! and it returned  nil. irb(main):001:0 puts Hello world! Hello world! nilf irb(main):002:0 To run this command again, simply press the up key on your keyboard to get to the statement you previously ran and press the Enter key. If you want to edit the statement before running it again, press the left and right arrow keys to move the cursor to the correct place in the statement. Make your edits and press Enter to run the new command. Pressing up or down additional times will allow you to examine more of statements youve run. The interactive Ruby tool should be used throughout learning Ruby. When you learn about a new feature or just want to try something, start up the interactive Ruby prompt and try it. See what the  statement  returns, pass  different parameters  to it and just do some general experimenting. Trying something yourself and seeing what it does can be a lot more valuable than just reading about it!

(250words minimum) - Essay Example But for me, something else was planned by destiny. For me, this day is the most memorable yet painful day of my entire life. On that day, I had a baseball game in the afternoon. The weather was strange. It was a bright sunny day yet excessively windy. I was not sure of catching a fly ball well in this weird climatic condition. During warm-ups, baseball coach gave me a fly ball and I thought that I would able to catch that ball with my gloves. But before I realize what had happened with me, I found that I was bleeding unceasingly. Then I realized that four of my bloody teeth were in my hand. I could also feel that couple of teeth were hanging by my braces inside the mouth. I could not believe that this accident actually has happened to me. Suddenly, many thoughts came in my mind including tomorrow’s SAT test, finals, graduation, family, friends, pain, teeth, and many other things. In fact, I truly felt that everything was over, and I cried loudly. I was not ready to accept the truth. I did not understand why I had to be punished so badly. As I moved into training center, everyone was staring with the sense of sympathy. I was crying like a small kid in front of my friends who were encouraging me. I was terrified when I realized that my parents were staying thousands miles away from my place. My advisor and baseball coach took me to the hospital. We could not find an oral surgeon anywhere in New Hampshire and the doctor in Plymouth memorial hospital tried to make phone calls for hours. I was bleeding for almost 11 hours until I met an oral surgeon in Mass General hospital in Boston. I was exhausted, yet was happy to get operated. When I returned to school, I understood that eating food would be a problem. The days were miserable. I always had fever and pain. I was not able to sleep well and was far behind of schoolwork. Additionally, I had to go to emergency
